Outwood Trail & Hurst Wood
This is the old railway track stretching from Radcliffe, through Whitefield ansd onto Phillips Park over the motorway. Now a bike track it continues into Waterdale and the old Viaduct in Prestwich. Hurst wood is a Forestry commision wood running east from the track. below the old railway runs the old line of the Bury Bolton Canal long since filled in. Mainly wooded pasture also borders the sites. The woodland is made of Birch and ancient oak woodland.
Species in the area include Nuthatch, Treecreeper and Greater Spotted Woodpecker. Flowers include red campion, water cress, and the walnut orb weaver spider hiding under birch bark. Hurst Wood is ancient woodland and this is reflected by finding the Plant Dogs Mercury. Whitefield has a number of water bodies which contain Gadwall, Teal, Tufted Duck, Goosander and Mute Swans.
